Three regions — Tartu and southern Estonia, Norway’s Bodø, and Austria’s Salzkammergut have been chosen as European Capitals of Culture for 2024 under a European Union initiative in place since 1985. Selection criteria now include development, social inclusion and ecological efforts.
In Bodø, a coastal Arctic Circle city, the opening ceremony will appear on a floating stage in the harbor, and the year’s roster of events will highlight the indigenous Sámi community, including Sámi theater and music.
Meanwhile, Salzkammergut, in collaboration with the Austrian Federal Railways, will route transport through an art route between Attnang-Puchheim and Tauplitz. Events will feature yodelling, artwork made from salt, and varied media depicting hikes on historic trails in the area.
Finally, Tartu and southern Estonia will feature hikes, films, concerts, a sticker exhibition and a mass kissing event inspired by a Kissing Students statue in Town Hall Square.
