A report by Penn-Wharton Budget Model economists indicates that over $175 billion in U.S. tariff revenue could need to be refunded if the Supreme Court rules against President Donald Trump’s emergency tariffs.
The Supreme Court could decide as soon as Friday on President Donald Trump’s tariffs, and the data indicate that a loss would substantially harm his economic and political plans for a second term.
Trump has highlighted that the revenue from all his tariffs is projected to be around $300 billion per year for the next ten years, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
The refunds totaling $175 billion would surpass the combined fiscal 2025 expenditures of the Department of Transportation, which is $127.6 billion, and the Department of Justice, which is $44.9 billion.
The White House states it will adopt alternative tariff authorities to reimpose tariffs if the court rules IEEPA tariffs as illegal.
