Starting in April 2025, Brazil will enact a new visa system that will require travelers from America to show bank account statements or payslips showing an average of $2,000 or get a sponsor willing to show their finances instead. Americans made up 483,000 of the six million travelers to Brazil in the first nine months of 2023, second only to travelers from Argentina.
Until 2019, American travelers needed to get a visa to enter Brazil, but the system was abolished at that time. Originally, the new visa requirements were expected to take place this year.
The visas will cost $80.90 and stay valid for 10 years and for multiple entries, though each stay is limited to 90 days each year. Visa applicants must also submit a letter of intent that includes dates and purpose of the trip, lodging details, proof of U.S. residence, return tickets or a signed return declaration and proof of income. The requirements also apply to Canadians and Australians.
The company managing the applications, VFS, “strongly recommends” applying for the visa at least two months in advance of travel, though processing times are expected to be five business days.
