This year saw 21.3 million people sign up for health insurance on Affordable Care Act marketplaces, marking a 30.7% annual increase, CMS data show. However, the ACA’s future remains in question as former President Trump continues pushing for repeal of the law.
The largest enrollment increases were seen in West Virginia, with 80.2%, Louisiana, with 75.9%, Ohio with 62.2%, Indiana, with 59.6% and Tennessee, with 59.5%. Other states with increases of 45% or more include Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, Arizona and Texas.
Nearly 25% of the enrollees were first-timers to the marketplace, and some of the increase may be due to loss of Medicaid coverage.
Additionally, marketplace subsidies have been increased and made more widely available, but these expansions are expected to expire after 2025 unless Congress extends them.
