U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturer Eli Lilly sued 10 wellness clinics, pharmacies and medical spas on Tuesday over allegations of patent infringement and counterfeiting.
The suit alleges that the locations in question sold knock off versions of Eli Lilly’s blockbuster diabetes drug, Mounjaro, which the manufacturer has now asked the federal government to block.
Eli Lilly is the sole patent holder of tirzepatide, the ingredient supposedly used in the clinic and spas’ “compounded” drug products.
Mounjaro has recently surged in popularity across the United States due to its weight loss effects, resulting in an ongoing supply shortage for Eli Lilly.
