Beyond Meat has introduced Sun Sausage, its first plant-based product that does not imitate traditional meat types such as beef, pork, or poultry. The sausage includes whole ingredients such as spinach, bell peppers, brown rice, and red lentils, and is available in three flavors: Pineapple Jalapeno, Pesto, and Cajun. The product is exclusively sold at Sprouts Farmers Markets nationwide and aims to offer a unique plant-based protein option.
The launch of Sun Sausage comes as Beyond Meat faces financial challenges, including eight consecutive quarters of declining revenue. CEO Ethan Brown expressed optimism for 2024, highlighting the company’s new health-focused products as part of a strategy to improve its market position. The Sun Sausage is made with avocado oil and fava beans, aligning with the company’s goal to provide “better-for-you” offerings.
Beyond Meat emphasized that Sun Sausage has received certifications from the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association, underscoring its commitment to healthier plant-based options. Despite the overall decline in plant-based meat and seafood sales in 2023, partly due to higher prices and concerns over processed ingredients, Beyond Meat hopes that its new product will help raise the nutritional standards of the plant-based food category.
