A new study from the Red List of Threatened Species claims that a quarter of all freshwater are at threat of extinction due to climate change and environmental pollution, the International Union for Conservation of Nature revealed Wednesday.
The IUCN data revealed that approximately 3,000 out of 15,000 analyzed freshwater fish were found to be under imminent threat.
According to the IUCN, the environmental issues posing the biggest threat to the freshwater fish population are sea water rising up rivers, droughts and declining water levels.
“Ensuring freshwater ecosystems are well-managed, remain free-flowing with sufficient water, and good water quality is essential to stop species declines and maintain food security, livelihoods and economies in a climate-resilient world,” said IUCN Species Survival Commission Freshwater Fish Specialist Group co-chair Kathy Hughes.
