The International Federation of Association Football will reportedly “mitigate the environmental impact” of its 2030 World Cup, the association said Monday.
FIFA’s decision to hold the 2030 tournament across Morocco, Spain and Portugal drew ire from climate activists who criticized the travel-related carbon emissions set to stem from the choice.
However, according to FIFA, the close proximity “footprint” of the three countries and their extensive internal infrastructure will allow the association to help curb the 2030 tournament’s environmental impact.
“From a sustainability point of view, it’s also worth mentioning that only one bid significantly reduces travel in relation to site inspection visits and other meetings,” FIFA said in a statement.
