According to new forecasts from the United Nations, the El Niño meteorological event is now expected to last through at least the first half of 2024.
The continued presence of El Niño is predicted to bring more rain than average to countries like Peru, Mexico and Ecuador, which could impact the production of major crops like wheat, corn and rice.
The agricultural sector of these countries could be impacted by economic losses of up to 26%, warned the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations report.
The FAO said it’s planning to deploy resources into communities left vulnerable by El Niño in the near future.
