The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is distributing $4.3 billion in grants to 25 projects in 30 states to reduce climate pollution. These grants target greenhouse gas emissions from sectors such as transportation, electric power, commercial and residential buildings, industry, agriculture, and waste management. The funding is part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, which allocates nearly $400 billion to accelerate the shift to clean energy like wind and solar power.
One significant grant includes $396 million to Pennsylvania to lower industrial greenhouse gas emissions from materials like cement and asphalt. EPA Administrator Michael Regan and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro will announce the state’s grant recipients in Pittsburgh. Additionally, Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla of California will announce nearly $500 million for decarbonizing transportation and freight at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, focusing on electric charging infrastructure and zero-emission freight vehicles.
The grants aim to support community-driven solutions for reducing air pollution and advancing environmental justice. For example, nearly $250 million will be allocated to boost electric vehicle infrastructure along Interstate 95 from Maryland to Connecticut, supporting zero-emission commercial vehicles and workforce development. Other allocations include $450 million for cold-climate heat pumps and water heaters in New England and $129 million to Michigan to aid renewable energy projects, aligning with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s goal of 60% renewable energy by 2035.
