Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, and her partners Josie McNamara and Tom Ackerley are working on a live-action feature film based on the board game Monopoly. The makers of Monopoly, Hasbro Entertainment, are also set to produce.
Monopoly is the world’s most popular board game, according to the studio Lionsgate, which acquired the development rights after purchasing eOne in December 2023. It’s for sale in more than 100 countries and, since 1935, has sold almost half a billion units.
The movie’s plotline is yet to be determined, but Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s Chair Adam Fogelson—who announced the movie at CinemaCon in Las Vegas—indicated that the LuckyChap has a “clear point of view.” LuckyChap previously produce “Barbie,” “I, Tonya” and “Promising Young Woman.”
“Monopoly is a top property—pun fully intended,” said LuckyChap. “Like all of the best IP, this game has resonated worldwide for generations, and we are so excited to bring this game to life alongside the wonderful teams involved at Lionsgate and Hasbro.”
