Metropolitan area employment was down in 350 of 389 metropolitan areas, lower in 22 areas and unchanged in 17 areas, according to US Bureau of Labor Statistics published today.
The largest year-over-year increases in metropolitan area unemployment was in Toledo, Ohio, with 2.8%.
The lowest unemployment rate Sioux Falls, South Dakota, had the lowest unemployment rate at 1.6% followed by Rapid City, South Dakota with 1.8% and Burlington-South Burlington, Vermont, with 1.9%.
The largest year-over-year increases in non-farm employment were in New York-Jersey City-White Plains which added 156,600 jobs and Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale with 73,900.
The national unemployment rate in July was 4.5% up from 3.8% in 2023.
