Your next Netflix rabbit hole may be your last

In addition to the overall top 10 list, consumers will also be able to see the top 10 most popular series and top 10 films when they click on the movies and TV shows tabs.

Ever watched a documentary on Netflix and wondered, “Is anyone else finding this deep dive into Czech orthodontia scandals as fascinating as I am?”

Wonder no more. Netflix said it will roll out top 10 lists that show the most popular movies and TV series on the platform. The lists will update daily so “you can easily see what’s in the zeitgeist.”

Whether you love books, music, films or TV, top 10 lists are a great way to find out what’s popular.

Netflix said the lists will be updated every day and positions will vary depending on how relevant the shows and films are to you.

Netflix said it’s been testing the top 10 lists in Mexico and the UK for over six months.

“Members in both countries have found them useful, so we are now rolling them out to even more,” it said matter-of-factly.

Why does the new feature matter? Netflix is famously protective of viewership data, and famously inconsistent about how it measures it. Last December, Netflix released its most popular movies and TV shows of 2019, but those numbers were calculated differently than the way Netflix previously counted a “view.” Plus, no third-party is verifying the data.

These top 10 lists nevertheless present an interesting thought experiment. How will seeing the most popular shows on Netflix influence what you watch?
