On Tuesday, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission announced an initiative to impose new regulations on high-speed internet service providers in an attempt to bring “net neutrality” nationwide.
According to FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, the regulations would stop internet giants like Verizon, AT&T and Comcast from slowing down users’ service or blocking access to online content.
The rules would also prevent providers from speeding up access to websites that have an undue advantage via paid fees or favoritism.
The regulatory move would also reclassify internet service providers as essential telecommunications entities, giving the FCC additional oversight to establish rules on net neutrality in the future.
