Ford is conducting a U.S. recall of almost 1.9 million Explorer SUVs because a trim piece can detach and fly off. The recall covers models from 2011 through 2019.
The clips that hold the trim covering roof supports near the windshield can come loose, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents. Last year, consumer complaints led to an investigation by US regulators, as well as inquiries from Canadian regulators.
Ford had previously decided against a recall due to the part’s low mass, but it changed course after regulators said the problem could be a safety hazard. Owners are being advised to seek an inspection from dealers when parts are available, and the company expects about 5% of the recalled vehicles to exhibit the problem.
So far, there have been 568 documented consumer complaints and more than 14,000 warranty reports about missing or detached parts, but Ford said no crashes or injuries have been reported.
