Boeing is responsible for a door plug recently blowing out on a 737 Max 9 airplane midflight earlier this month and must do better, said CEO Dave Calhoun.
“We caused the problem, and we understand that,” Calhoun said during an investor call. “Whatever conclusions are reached, Boeing is accountable for what happened. Whatever the specific cause of the accident might turn out to be, an event like this simply must not happen on an airplane that leaves one of our factories. We simply must be better.”
Following the midflight blowout, the Federal Aviation Administration halted Boeing’s plans to increase production of current models.
The company did not provide financial guidance or give an update on when two new versions of the 737 Max — the 737 Max 10 and the 737 Max 7 — will be certified and ready for airline use. “While we often use this time of year to share or update our financial and operational objectives, now is not the time for that,” Calhoun said.
