Starting this week, U.S. Google users will experience how the company will now incorporate artificial intelligence into its search results with the introduction of AI Overviews. This new feature, unveiled on Tuesday at Google’s annual conference, generates information summaries above standard search results.
However, some are concerned that Overviews will negatively impact the websites appearing in the search results. If a user can get the information needed through an AI-generate summary, they’re less likely to need to click through to other websites.
However, “the links included in AI Overviews get more clicks” than those in standard search results, wrote Google’s Vice President of Search Liz Reid in a blog post. “We’ll continue to focus on sending valuable traffic to publishers and creators.”
Google also announced other AI initiatives, such as Gemini 1.5 Flash from DeepMind, Google’s AI lab, which is lighter in size than Gemini 1.5 pro. They also unveiled another AI model, Veo, which creates high-definition videos generated from simple text prompts, as well as updated versions of its image generator, Imagen 3, and its music-generation tool, Lyria.
