The Canadian government announced Friday it has concluded negotiations with the United States on an agreement allowing the use of U.S. space launch technology, expertise, and data for space launches in Canada. This pending agreement will establish necessary legal and technical safeguards for handling sensitive technology.
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly stated that the agreement would help Canada’s commercial space launch industry by facilitating cross-border collaboration, positioning Canada as a global leader in this sector. Maritime Launch Services, developing Canada’s first commercial spaceport in Nova Scotia, hailed the agreement as a significant advancement for the industry.
The federal government is updating its regulatory framework to support the growing global commercial space launch industry. Ottawa aims to leverage Canada’s geographical advantages, such as vast, sparsely populated areas and high-inclination orbits, to become a future leader in commercial space launches.
