After months of contention surrounding the safety of driverless robotaxis in California, it looks like driverless vehicles are still capable of putting the pedal to the metal without worrying about state fines.
Despite clear data of the robotaxis running red lights and disobeying other standard rules of the road, California police officers are unable to issue tickets to any vehicle that commits a traffic infraction without a driver inside.
Though the taxis can receive parking tickets, it seems that the driverless vehicles are immune from receiving any traffic tickets while in motion.
As technology continues to accelerate at a speed far beyond changes to California’s road rules, it remains to be seen if robotaxis such as Cruise will still get off scot-free from traffic violations down the road.
