Elon Musk’s social media platform X sued a global advertising alliance and several major companies on the grounds that they unlawfully conspired to boycott the site, causing significant revenue losses for X. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Texas, includes the World Federation of Advertisers, Unilever, Orsted, Mars, and CVS Health.
According to the lawsuit, these advertisers, through the World Federation of Advertisers’ Global Alliance for Responsible Media initiative, collectively withheld “billions of dollars in advertising revenue” from X, acting against their own economic interests and violating U.S. antitrust law. X claims it has applied brand-safety standards comparable to those of its competitors, yet it has become a “less effective competitor” in the digital advertising market.
X’s CEO, Linda Yaccarino, stated that restricting the marketplace of ideas hurts people and no small group should monopolize monetization. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and a court order to prevent any continued conspiracy to withhold advertising dollars from the platform.
