Walmart will offer deeper discounts on fuel trying to get more customers to join and renew Walmart+, the company announced.
After previously offering 5 cents discount a gallon, now Walmart+ subscribers will get 10 cents off at participating fuel stations. Only 2,000 Murphy gas stations and Sam’s Club and Walmart stores started in the program, now the company said it is reaching 12,000 Exxon and Mobil stations across the U.S.
According to media reports senior vice president and Walmart+ head Chris Cracchiolo said this very high inflationary environment.
“Fuel is not really a discretionary purchase. We’re seeing members having to buy fuel to manage their everyday lives. So, we think this is really going to help them save more money,” he said.
With inflation at a four-decade high, now the retail giant is flexing its low prices as a competitive advantage. According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of regular gas cost is up more than 43% today from the year-earlier.
Walmart is moving to strengthen the subscription service that was launched in 2020 to expand its e-commerce business and to compete with Amazon Prime.
The company also announced last month that all workers in stores and warehouses would get free membership as an employee benefit.
