One of the most important factors to consider when contemplating an overseas move is personal finances. According to a 2024 InterNations study, Vietnam ranks as the most affordable country for expats for the fourth consecutive year, topping the list of 53 destinations in terms of personal finances.

Despite its affordability, Vietnam’s overall ranking was mixed in other categories. Out of the 53 countries surveyed, Vietnam placed 40th for quality of life, 29th for expat essentials like digital life, housing, and language, and 14th for working abroad, which includes factors like career prospects, salary, and job security. The broader Expat Insider 2024 survey, which gathered insights from over 12,000 expats across 174 territories, also highlighted the best and worst places to live, focusing on quality of life, working abroad, and personal finance.

The Personal Finance Index from InterNations used data on general cost of living, satisfaction with financial situation, and the adequacy of disposable household income for a comfortable life to compile the rankings. This year’s list saw few changes, with the notable addition of Brazil entering at 9th place, replacing Malaysia, which dropped from 5th to 11th. The top 10 destinations for expats’ personal finances are Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, Panama, Philippines, India, Mexico, Thailand, Brazil, and China, with Asian countries notably dominating the list.
