The CEO of UnitedHealthcare was shot and killed in a “premeditated, targeted attack” outside the New York Hilton in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning.
Brian Thompson, 50, was on his way to speak at UnitedHealth Group’s investor conference when he was shot to death.
“The motive for this murder is currently unknown, but based on the evidence we have so far, it does appear the victim was specifically targeted,” police stated, “But at this point, we do not know why.”
Paulette Thompson, Brian Thompson’s wife said her husband had been receiving threats leading up to the shooting.
The shooter, still at large, is believed to be an experienced marksman.
In a statement to investors, UnitedHealthcare said, “We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him. We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time. Our hearts go out to Brian’s family and all who were close to him.”
According to a UnitedHealthcare statement the day before the shooting, Wednesday’s conference was to introduce UnitedHealth Group’s 2025 outlook, which included revenues of $450 billion to $455 billion.
Thompson was named chief executive of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021. UnitedHealthcare provides health coverage to over 49 million Americans.
