The US government has declared a suspension of green cards for leading IT outsourcing companies including Microsoft and Adobe. Additionally, the Trump administration revealed an investigation into nine major universities, expanding its crackdown which aims to combat fraud and safeguard American jobs.

“There has been no company in the United States, unfortunately, that has abused the system more than Microsoft,” Vice President JD Vance said in the announcement. He added that the tech giant laid off 6,000 US employees in 2025, while benefiting from 6,300 H-1B temporary worker visas and nearly 3,000 green cards.

Vance’s comments came hours before Trump honored a group of tech billionaires for their contributions to America, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Nadella once held an H-1B visa, as did Elon Musk, who was also honored.

Nadella thanked Trump for the medal, saying in a post on X: “Thank you, @POTUS, for this incredible honor today. I’m humbled to stand alongside so many giants of American innovation and looking forward for what we can continue to do together to advance technology and drive American prosperity.”

The Administration’s move to freeze Big Tech visas follows the White House’s implementation of a $100,000 fee on fresh H-1B petitions.
