Trump Administration officials have confirmed that the United States Government will continue with its plan to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico on Tuesday, calling the situation “fluid”.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said “There are going to be tariffs on Tuesday on Mexico and Canada…Exactly what they are, we’re going to leave that for the president and his team to negotiate.”
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday, “Well, we don’t know yet because it’s path-dependent, but what I can tell you is that I’m not worried about China,” Bessent said. “China will pay for the tariffs because their business model is exporting their way out of this inflation… They will eat any tariffs that go on.”
“It’s a holistic approach. There will be tariffs, there will be cuts in regulation, there will be cheaper energy,” said Bessent. “I’m expecting inflation to continue dropping over the year.” Bessent concluded.
Today, U.S. stock index futures increased as markets brace for the tariffs to take effect.
