President Trump signed two executive orders on Monday targeting the emerging field of quantum computing. They aim to accelerate the development of “commercially relevant” machines by the end of his term and speed up the government’s readiness against quantum-enabled cyberattacks.
The White House stated that the sector is “on the verge of a massive commercial breakthrough.”
The latest executive orders will give Trump’s Office of Science and Technology Policy the authority to oversee new quantum projects across various government agencies, including the Departments of Commerce, Defense, and Energy, as well as NASA.
The first order emphasizes developing new capabilities and calls for creating a computer “powerful enough for scientific research” by 2028, which the White House said aligns with “a new era of commercial capabilities.”
On Monday, President Trump emphasized in the Oval Office that “we are going to be investing in American quantum leadership like never before.”
The second order emphasizes national security and speeds up the government’s schedule for preparing for post-quantum cryptography to 2031.
“These policies will drive transformational growth in existing and entirely new industries… Quantum breakthroughs mean innovation, economic growth, national security that will benefit the American people for decades to come.” Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, told reporters.
