New York, Minnesota, and Michigan have been warned of a 25% tariff on all Canadian electricity, which could raise bills over $100 per month for energy users in the region.
This morning, Trump took to Truth Social to inform Canada that any retaliatory tariffs will result in even higher levies on Canadian imports.
“Based on Ontario, Canada, placing a 25% Tariff on ‘Electricity’ coming into the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to ad an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD,” President Trump wrote.
Mark Carney, Canada’s incoming P.M posted on X, “My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect and make credible, reliable commitments to free and fair trade.”
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Ontario Premier Doug Ford have agreed to meet on Thursday to renegotiate USMCA trade offerings.
