President Donald Trump is expected to announce new tariffs of 25% on all steel and aluminum imports into the U.S. later today. The latest tariff would come in addition to existing metal duties and represents a significant escalation of his trade policies.
President Trump announced to reporters on his way to the Super Bowl yesterday, “Any steel coming into the United States is going to have a 25% tariff … Aluminum too.”
Trump indicated that he will provide the latest regulation update during a news conference on Tuesday or Wednesday. The European Union indicated that it may respond, while Trump stated, “Every country will be reciprocal,” adding, “It’s very simple: if they charge us, we charge them.”
The United States and European Union have the world’s largest commercial relationship.
The president is set to sign new executive orders today at 1 pm ET.
