Today, President Trump took to Truth Social to express his desire to lower tariffs in the upcoming discussions his Administration has with China over the weekend.

Trump wrote, “CHINA SHOULD OPEN UP ITS MARKET TO USA — WOULD BE SO GOOD FOR THEM!!! CLOSED MARKETS DON’T WORK ANYMORE!!!”

“80% Tariff on China seems right! Up to Scott B,” he wrote in a follow-up post.

According to Trump, Scott Bessent, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, will take the lead in negotiating the terms for his administration’s initial deal with China, scheduled for this weekend in Geneva.

Earlier this week, Bessent stated that his talks with China aim to initiate the thawing of a strained trade relationship, “My sense is that this will be about de-escalation, not about the big trade deal … but we’ve got to de-escalate before we can move forward. You know, 145% [tariffs], 125%, is the equivalent of an embargo. We don’t want to decouple, what we want is fair trade.”

Bessent stated that normalizing U.S. trade with China could take two to three years.
