After extensive discussions with executives from U.S. auto giants Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, President Trump has agreed to exempt the auto industry from the 25% tariffs imposed on vehicles imported from Mexico and Canada.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt informed the media that companies operating under the free-trade agreement signed during the first Trump administration would be granted a temporary one-month tariff exemption. “At the request of the companies associated with USMCA, the president is giving them an exemption for one month so they’re not at an economic disadvantage.”
Leavitt stated that Trump has warned the automakers to utilize the monthlong reprieve to begin relocating auto production back to the United States. “He told them they should get on it, start investing, start moving, shift production here to the United States of America, where they will pay no tariff. That’s the ultimate goal.”
Leavitt confirmed that President Trump would stay open to additional tariff exemptions.
Until further negotiations commence, the existing across-the-board 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada will remain in effect.
