Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has called for a snap election at the end of next month, sending the country to the polls on April 28th.
The snap election comes at a time when Canada faces “the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump’s unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty,” Carney says.
A significant issue for Canadian voters is the trade war with the U.S. and President Donald Trump’s proposal for its neighbor to become the 51st American state.
Trump’s recent comments about Canada have upset the new Prime Minister, who took office just nine days ago. Carney, a Liberal, responded to Trump’s threats by stating yesterday, “Our response must be to build a strong economy and a more secure Canada. President Trump claims that Canada isn’t a real country. He wants to break us so America can own us. We will not allow that to happen.”
Carney will compete against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre for the position of Prime Minister. Poilievre stated that Carney’s party is failing to provide change and is merely “making the same promises they’ve been breaking for over 10 years.”
