Copper prices have reached an all-time high after President Donald Trump indicated that he might impose tariffs on the resource in the coming weeks. Prices for copper peaked at $5.374 per pound on Wednesday before settling at a record $5.24 per pound by the end of trade.
Since the beginning of 2025, copper prices have increased by 30% as buyers stockpile the metal in the U.S. amid concerns about potential tariffs. Global investors worry that the recent U.S. stockpiling may leave the rest of the world with diminished reserves.
Mercuria estimates that approximately 500,000 tons of copper will be shipped to the US this month — a significant increase from the typical monthly import of about 70,000 tons.
Goldman Sachs stated Wednesday, “We think shipments to the US will likely be fast tracked,” potentially increasing by 200,000 tons in April.
Comparatively, gold, which has also reached record highs this year due to market anxiety and geopolitical tension, has gained 16% in 2025.
