The Republican-led House has voted to stop the U.S. war with Iran, diverging from President Donald Trump on a foreign conflict that is increasingly hurting Americans’ economy.
The Republicans that voted in favor of the resolution were: Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Tom Barrett of Michigan, Warren Davidson of Ohio and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania.
Despite the result, the House vote won’t prevent US military strikes on Iran. The Senate still needs to pass the resolution, and also, the provisions in the 1973 War Powers Act that the House cited are legally questionable.
President Trump posted on Truth Social Thursday morning to voice his opposition to the vote, writing: “Yesterday, in a meaningless vote, the House voted, 4 bad Republicans and all of the Dumocrats, to limit my War Powers, right in the middle of my final negotiations to end the War with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Who would do such an unpatriotic thing. They know where the negotiations stand. The Democrats are fueled by Trump Derangement Syndrome. They would rather have our Country fail than give me another, of many, victories. The four Republicans, that’s a whole other story – They’re GRANDSTANDERS! They should be ashamed of themselves. MAGA!!! President DJT”
“It is a very dangerous prospect to take away from the administration and the commander in chief right now, the ability to negotiate,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said leading up to the vote.
Sixty-four percent of Americans believe that going to war with Iran was the wrong decision, according to a New York Times/Siena poll conducted in May.
