The first Pope from the Americas, Pope Francis, has passed away shortly after leading Easter services at the Vatican. Pope Francis died from a respiratory illness one month after he was released from a Rome hospital, where he had been treated for five weeks.
The Pontiff’s passing comes just one day after he met with Vice President JD Vance, a devout Catholic. Following their meeting, Vance said, “I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill.”
The Vice President wrote on X today, “I just learned of the passing of Pope Francis. My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him.”
Following Trump’s inauguration, Pope Francis openly criticized his administration’s immigration policies; however, the trivial topic was not mentioned during the Vice President’s weekend visit.
The White House shared a post on X featuring photos of the Pontiff with JD Vance on Saturday, and Trump with Pope Francis in 2017, stating, “Rest in Peace.”
Pope Francis was the first non-European Pope in nearly 1,300 years.
