In its opening weekend, Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” pulled in $155 million from ticket sales in theaters across the U.S. and Canada, according to studio estimates, with another $140 million from international showings.
It’s the biggest opening of 2024, as well as the strongest showing since last year’s “Barbie.” The numbers also make it the second-highest animated film opening ever behind 2018’s “Incredible 2,” which brought in $182.7 million in its first weekend.
Although Tony Chambers, Disney’s head of theatrical distribution, had expected the movie to perform well, he said even he was surprised at the $295 million global total. Pixar has released a string of underperforming films recently, particularly “Lightyear.” Additionally, Hollywood as a whole has been running at a 26% deficit.
“Everybody needed this because success begets success,” Chambers said. “It’s great for the industry, great for Pixar and great for the business overall.”
