World markets are today on edge as Americans head to the polls.
The U.S. election cycle 2024 has been one that has already drastically moved markets and, depending on its result, could further sway markets in the fallout. The outlook for all major industries is uncertain until today’s winner is announced. Many facets of Corporate America hang in the balance – including the dollar and U.S. debt.
Today stocks reflect recent record highs driven by a robust economy, strong corporate profits and Federal Reserve interest rate cuts.
With pre-election polls showing there to be no obvious winner, both sides are waging on sheer turnout to sway the election. Vice President Kamala Harris called her team today “optimistic and excited”. She finished her final rally yesterday saying “Tonight, we finish as we started — with optimism, with energy, with joy, knowing that we the people have the power to shape our future, and that we can confront any challenge we face when we do it together.”
The Republican camp is also feeling confident. “We feel like we’re in a position now where, if the people who we think are going to turn out for President Trump turn out, then he ought to win. So it’s a matter of achieving that. It’s close. It’s really close,” a senior Trump adviser said Monday “I hate to sound so ridiculous. ‘Oh, it’s turnout,’ but that’s really what this comes down to and the only thing we’re focused on right now.”
Experts say there is an area that is much clearer than in 2016 – there are fewer “silent” Trump voters in 2024. A Trump spokesperson recently commented, “Whereas before turnout for him was maybe surprising, especially in 2016, and a lot of people were silent about their vote and that didn’t always register in the data, it’s unclear if we’ll see that type of difference this time around,”
To combat previous claims about election fraud, officials all over the country have doubled down on security. “Here in Georgia, it is easy to vote and hard to cheat,” Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said Monday. “Our systems are secure and our people are ready.”
Polls are currently open in over 25 states.
