Nvidia is reportedly negotiating to provide around $250 billion in financing guarantees for OpenAI as part of a large data center project. According to analysts, Nvidia’s support would help establish financing structures to reassure lenders about the project’s funding.
This support would enable the ChatGPT creator to lease a 10-gigawatt facility currently under development by SoftBank’s energy arm in southern Ohio.. For OpenAI, this deal marks a step toward managing its own infrastructure instead of relying on rental arrangements with Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle.
The project, with an estimated cost exceeding $500 billion for data center hardware, includes a $250 billion guarantee that covers lease and debt but excludes the chips. Nvidia is also exploring financing options for the chips, potentially up to $350 billion.
The initial phase, scheduled for completion by 2028, will provide approximately 800 megawatts of power. It will be managed by the U.S. government, with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick involved in access decisions, and will be financed separately by Japan through a trade deal linked to a $33 billion investment in a natural gas plant.
OpenAI has been in advanced talks to lease the site for several weeks and is among the most interested parties, along with Anthropic, Microsoft, and Google, which have also approached Lutnick recently.
This deal underscores a broader trend of tech giants leveraging debt and equity markets to fund AI infrastructure, with total spending projected to exceed $700 billion this year.
