Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch accused the world’s top AI firms of using safety concerns as a cover-up for their negligence.

“The debate that we’ve seen in the U.S. has been a cover for the negligence of some of our competitors,” Mensch told reporters.

“When you give them a lot of tools, those systems [AI agents] are very dynamic, so they can go and do things that you do not expect… You need to have the right monitoring in place, and the enterprises we work with, we give them those kind of monitoring systems,” he said.

Mensch’s comments arrive amid a global increase in rogue AI incidents, including a recent case in Australia where an OpenAI-developed agent hacked a government website.

Along with the CEO, others have voiced criticism of the AI safety debate in the U.S. Notably, David Sacks, a former White House crypto advisor and now co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, urged tech companies to acknowledge that their motivation to slow AI development may not be entirely altruistic.

In July, Anthropic reported three incidents in which its Claude models accessed the internet during testing and unexpectedly gained unauthorized access to the systems of three separate organizations.

Mensch’s statement comes as OpenAI announced Monday that it will not release its upcoming AI model, GPT-6.1 Astra, because it did not meet safety standards. Meanwhile, a day later, Anthropic reportedly warned potential IPO investors that the technology could pose “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity.”

Mistral also develops AI models, but unlike OpenAI and Anthropic, it partners directly with individual companies. This lets them create custom AI tools tailored to each company’s needs and seamlessly integrate these solutions into their business operations.

“We have been raising the capital needed to scale the compute that we need to train bigger and more powerful models, in order for us to own our own destiny,” Mensch said Tuesday.
