On Tuesday, supercar manufacturer McLaren announced a $675 million investment in its UK manufacturing and engineering facilities. The company plans to introduce new models, including its first SUV, to boost sales and achieve profit margins comparable to Ferrari’s.
McLaren’s investment plans involve establishing a new assembly plant in the UK and developing its own transmissions and engines.
McLaren CEO Nick Collins explained that the company’s investment plan builds on last year’s restructuring, following its acquisition by Abu Dhabi’s CYVN Holdings. This firm also took a non-controlling stake in McLaren’s Formula One division. Currently, McLaren’s primary shareholder is Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, L’IMAD.
L’IMAD has committed to investing 1.5 billion pounds in McLaren over the next five years.
The news follows McLaren’s recent restructuring process, which saw sales fall to around 2,000 cars in 2025 from just under 3,300 in 2024.
The new performance SUV being developed is part of a strategy to increase sales by providing customers with more options, with several models planned. However, Collins declined to share specific product details or launch dates. “It will bring something unique to the segment, which we think the customers will value,” he said.
“McLaren Automotive is doubling down on Britain,” UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said in a statement.
The company expects this initiative to generate 1,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2032.
