The Trump administration has terminated 880 U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration workers.
It is estimated that hundreds more employees from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service will be laid off before early March in an effort to reduce government personnel and cut costs.
NOAA spokesperson, Susan Buchanan commented, “NOAA remains dedicated to its mission, providing timely information, research and resources that serve the American public and ensure our nation’s environmental and economic resilience. We continue to provide weather information, forecasts and warnings pursuant to our public safety mission.”
NOAA employees have raised concerns that the agency is already facing staffing challenges and that additional reductions would harm its ability to operate.
Prior to the cuts, the NOAA reported having 12,000 employees including over 6,700 scientists and engineers.
