The U.S. Federal Trade Commission issued a consumer alert this week that warned potential spring breakers to be on the lookout for travel deals that seem too good to be true, such as “free” vacation that comes with high fees or low-priced deals without any additional details.
“When you’re planning a trip—whether it’s a last-minute spring break vacation or another trip—you might be tempted to jump on an offer for a great deal,” the FTC warned. “Unfortunately, scammers sometimes hide behind those offers. Their goal? To try to steal your money… Not only could your dream vacation turn into a nightmare, but if you pay, it’ll be hard to get your money back.”
It’s recommended to do your research by searching a travel company or agent along with the words “review,” “complaint” or “scam.” Additionally, don’t sign anything until you have details on where you’ll be staying and cancellation policies.
If you’re asked to pay for a trip with a wire transfer, gift card or cryptocurrency, walk away. “Dishonest travel package promoters will ask you to pay in one of these ways, but that’s a sure sign of a scam,” the commission said in the alert.
