The dollar stayed near a two-week high on Monday, as U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent prepares for a G20 finance ministers and central bank governors’ meeting hosted by the U.S. on Monday and Tuesday.
The meeting comes at a time of significant uncertainty regarding the Trump administration’s upcoming tariff strategies, ongoing trade tensions with Canada, and rising energy and commodity prices driven by the Iran conflict.
The dollar index fell slightly to 99.6 after rising 0.6% on Friday to its highest level since August 17.
Today, the euro edged up roughly 0.1% to $1.1590, and sterling stayed nearly unchanged at $1.3545. Both currencies are on pace for their second straight monthly increases.
Bessent said on Sunday that recent fluctuations in the yen have been “pretty well contained,” and he expects Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda to “do the right thing” on monetary policy.
Investors are now turning their focus to upcoming U.S. economic data, including Friday’s nonfarm payrolls report and next week’s consumer inflation figures, before the September Fed meeting.
