After discussions with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian officials, President Trump has signed executive actions that postpone tariffs on all products covered by the USMCA free trade treaty for nearly one month.
“After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay Tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, Thursday.
“I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping Illegal Aliens from entering the United States and, likewise, stopping Fentanyl,” President Trump added.
In the latest agreement, Trump has delayed the 25% tariffs until April 2.
The Mexican President took to X to declare that “virtually all” of Mexico’s products will remain tariff free, until April 2nd. “It was a very respectful call. That must be highlighted. It has always been done with respect. We may not agree on things, but it must be highlighted that we had a respectful conversation,” Sheinbaum reported.
Despite his heavy criticism of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trump granted Canada trade exemptions to match those given to Mexico.
“Believe it or not, despite the terrible job he’s done for Canada, I think that Justin Trudeau is using the Tariff problem, which he has largely caused, in order to run again for Prime Minister. So much fun to watch!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
In response, Canada announced it will implement a one-month pause on its planned tariffs for over 4,000 U.S. goods.
