By exploiting a fundamental gap in Microsoft’s cloud, Chinese hackers managed to breech email accounts at the Commerce and State departments, including that of Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, the government reported Wednesday.
The Commerce Department has recently imposed stiff export controls on Chinese technologies that Beijing has labeled a malicious attempt to suppress its companies.
So far, no other cabinet-level official has had their email accounts compromised in what the Biden administration has said is Raimondo is a targeted cyberespionage campaign.
An FBI investigation is being conducted on the hacking.
