This week, President Xi Jinping sent a strong signal that China is willing to resolve trade issues with the US leading up to Trump’s inauguration.
In a letter to China Business Council on Thursday, President Xi wrote that China and the US should “choose dialogue over confrontation, win-win cooperation over a zero-sum game.” He made comments reiterating a willingness to further open China to foreign business, including US trade.
The remarks follow Tuesday’s speech where he said “there will be no winners in tariff wars, trade wars, technology wars.”
Experts believe that the messages reflect a growing anxiety about a pending trade war, with the usually private China, uncharacteristically revealing sensitive information about their economic vulnerabilities. Xi’s messages show a clear willingness to cooperate with the new US administration, which could serve many political benefits to Beijing.
