In a statement today, China revealed its willingness to begin negotiations with U.S. officials regarding tariffs.
China’s Commerce Ministry made the announcement, stating: “If we fight, we will fight to the end; if we talk, the door is open. The tariff war and trade war were unilaterally initiated by the United States. If the United States wants to talk, it should show its sincerity and be prepared to correct its wrong practices and cancel the unilateral tariffs.”
The announcement comes after Chinese media reported earlier this week that the Trump Administration initiated contact to start trade discussions, even though President Trump has publicly insisted that President Xi should take the first step.
A potential de-escalation in the trade war, coupled with China’s expanding list of U.S. goods exempt from its 125% tariffs, could elevate investor hopes.
