Two cyber “incidents” at data provider CDK Global, which provides software for more than 15,000 car dealerships, has caused a massive outage, which could last for days.
The first incident occurred on Wednesday, but CDK said that the majority of the critical computer systems were back online by the end of the day. On Thursday, however, a second incident occurred, causing the data company to proactivity shut down its systems.
“We are actively investigating a cyber incident. Out of an abundance of caution and concern for our customers, we have shut down most of our systems and are working diligently to get everything up and running as quickly as possible,” said CDK spokesperson Lisa Finney.
Auto dealerships use CDK’s products to handle tasks such as scheduling and communicating with customers about service, as well as keeping records of negotiated deals. The outage could cost dealerships significant money by delaying sales at the risk of customers finding another dealer nearby that doesn’t use CDK’s products.
