Canada’s Trade Minister, Mary Ng has spoken out against President Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, saying “They will simply create costs for Americans.”
Speaking to reporters today, Minister Mary Ng protested Trump’s tariff agenda, saying that if the current trade deal between the U.S. and Canada falls through, her nation is ready to retaliate.
“Should Canada get tariffs that are punishing, tariffs that will hurt our economy, everything will be on the table,” Ms Ng said.
Since Canada is one of the United States’ largest trading partners, Ng believes that imposing tariffs would not be in the country’s best interest. She points out that the average American household is already facing challenges during these tough economic times, and adding tariffs would likely lead to higher prices for everyday goods.
“We’re going to need to keep working with the Americans on the idea that tariffs, particularly in the order that the president has indicated, really is not good for the American public,” she said.
Despite Ng’s retaliatory tariff threats, economists warn that Canada’s weakened economy gives it less ammunition to weather a trade war.
Since Trump announced his proposed 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, businesses have been reported planning to shift investments or production from Canada to the U.S. to reduce costs.
