Major health insurer Blue Shield California elected to switch prescription medication providers in an effort to offer its clients lower medication costs.
Blue Shield California has ended its partnership with CVS Health’s Caremark in favor of partnering with Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drug Company and Amazon Pharmacy, among others.
Once this plan is implemented, the insurer reportedly expects to save approximately $500 million.
According to Blue Shield, which covers 4.8 million Californians, the prescription provider switch is part of the insurer’s goals “to fix problems in today’s broken prescription drug system.”
