Apple’s first folding phone, the iPhone Duo, hit stores around the world on Friday with a price tag of about $2,000.
“The response to iPhone Duo from our developer community has been incredible, and we’re inspired by how quickly they’ve embraced its larger display and new ways to interact,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. “From watching popular shows and content on the expansive inner display to multitasking across windows or playing console-quality games, developers around the world are reimagining what their apps can do. We can’t wait for users to discover these experiences beginning this Friday, with many more app experiences to follow.”
“People watch Netflix in all kinds of moments, and we built our new experience to move with them,” said Tom Richards, Netflix’s senior director of Engineering. “From browsing Clips on the outer display to settling in with a favorite show on the inner display, the experience adapts as iPhone Duo opens, closes, or turns, so discovering something new and sitting down to watch it feels effortless.”
Early reviews have praised the Duo’s design and its sturdy, nearly invisible hinge, a significant achievement for phones whose prominent screen crease has long been a drawback and a potential deterrent to buyers.
However, reviewers said camera compromises, including the lack of a telephoto lens, and third-party apps that still need to be reworked for the new display size could disappoint some buyers. The Duo is also reportedly less handy for quick tasks.
Apple shares fell less than 1% following the Duo’s release.
